Board Approved Supervisor Training

Part 2 - Skills Based Training (2 day workshop/13 hours CPD)

 

This second stage of the supervisor training program is a face to face workshop conducted over 2 days. The workshop will cover 8 modules designed to enhance the understanding of the trainees’ knowledge acquired in Part One of the board approved supervisor training program and the practical application of that knowledge into supervision practice. 

 

Module 1: Competency-based models of supervision

 

  1. Review of board approved supervisor training requirements and accreditation pathway

  2. Changes in clinical supervision to competency based models

  3. Review of competency based models of supervision

  4. Review of board approved competencies 

 

Module 2: Meta-Competencies - Knowledge

 

  1. The science practitioner mindset

  2. Review of meta-competencies (4 elements) of the board approved competencies and their practical applications: knowledge, skills, attitude, relationship elements

  3. Definition of knowledge competencies 

  • Assessment domains: diagnostic and differential diagnosis competency and case conceptualisation competency

  • Intervention domains

  • Professional Issues domains

  • The 3 types of knowledge: content, conditional and process

 

Module 3: Meta-Competencies – Skills

 

  1. Definition of skills based competencies

  2. Skills Training: acquisition, consolidation and generalisation

  3. Observation techniques- Delayed and direct 

  4. Dialogical reflexivity

  5. Interpersonal process recall in reviewing audio-video

  6. Role play techniques 

  7. Journaling

  8. Socratic questioning

  9. Reviewing case notes and reports

 

Module 4: Meta-Competencies – Attitude-Values Competencies

 

  1. Definition of Attitude-Values Competencies

  2. Enhancing self awareness

  3. Attitudes towards the client, profession, and self as therapist and supervisor

  4. Attitudes towards cultural and lifestyle diversity, ethical judgments and behaviour, multidisciplinary competence and self care

 

Module 5: Meta-Competencies – Relationship Competencies

 

  1. Assessing relational competence

  2. Assessing effective therapeutic relationships

  3. Managing transference and countertransference in supervisory relationships

  4. Interpersonal dynamics

  5. Difficult conversations in supervision

  6. Managing supervisory relationships: working alliance ruptures, boundaries and resistance

  7. Vicarious trauma, burn out and self care practices

 

Module 6: Reflective and Deliberate Practice

 

  1. The Reflective Practice mindset: Rational vs Reflective and Reactive

  2. The Deliberate practice mindset: The 4 components

  3. Routine Outcome Monitoring

  4. Feedback Informed Treatment (FIT) to monitor client outcomes

  5.  Using an individualized “taxonomy of skills”

 

Module 7: Individual Competency-Based Developmental plans

 

  1. Developmental stages of competence 

  2. Working in the learning zone: Getting the mix right for optimal learning

  3. Designing individual competency based developmental plans

  4. Evaluation and review of competency based developmental plans

 

Module 8: Evaluation of the Supervisor-Supervisee

 

  1. Best practice guidelines concerning evaluation of supervisor and supervision

  2. Supervisor evaluations (formative and summative) and gate keeping

  3. Potential biases affecting supervisory judgements of trainee competence 

  4. Developing Supervision Toolkits

  5. Measuring the supervision alliance

  6. Roadmap to effective supervision

  7. Evaluating our own supervision needs

 

Learning materials 
This part of the training will be delivered utilizing a mix of didactic content, exercises, discussions, role plays and self reflection tasks and provided with instructional text on each topic, along with reading materials and links to board registration guidelines and standards and external resources if applicable.

 

Prerequisite Registration Requirements

Successful completion of Part One – Knowledge component of the board approved supervision training program. This information will be verified at registration. 

 

Completion of Assessment
Participants in this course must successfully complete the 4 written assessments over the 2 days (80% pass rate, with review and repeat of assessment as required)

 

Timeframes for Completion
The completion of the two days of the workshop. Certificates of Completion will be provided on the successful completion of the 2 day workshop
